Can you save money with insurance?

A lot of people ask, is insurance worth it? It's a good question. I guess it depends on your own personal situation and how you would cope financially if something was to happen to your loved ones.
If your partner was to die, the bills don't stop coming in, you still have gas and electricity, phone bills, car and mortgage repayments to pay, plus a funeral. You also lose your partner's income.
So taking those few things in to consideration, how would you cope? Is insurance worth it? Would getting a lump sum payout of tens of thousands of dollars help you?
Would it be easier to pay a few dollars a day to get that lump sum? These lump sums are generally tax free and you can set up the life insurance payouts so that you get it paid out over ten years, some people take this option, it can help with large impulse buys like a new car etc.
